Social Media

Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0 and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.  Social media is about conversations, community, connecting with the audience and building relationships. It is not just a broadcast channel or a sales and marketing tool. Furthermore Social media enables you to respond, listen first and speak second. In 1969 two Chicago computer hobbyists invented the Bulletin Board System (BBS) to inform friends of meetings, make announcement and share information through postings. It was the beginning of small virtual community. After two years specifically in 1971, Raymond Samuel Tomlinson is a US programmer who implemented an email system on the ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was the first person who sent an email to himself.

Here a list of popular social media websites which you may want to check out. The first one is Facebook, it is the world’s most popular social network. There is no smart phone that does not have a build-in Facebook app in it. The second one is Twitter, it is a very popular micro-blog. Its users can follow whom they want to follow, including businessmen, actors, actress, models or any of their favorite stars and friends. You can also share your feeling with your friends in 160 words which twitter calls a “tweet”. The third web is INSTAGRAM comes with a unique idea of social networking. It lets its users to share and tags their pictures with their friends circle. Another feature that this site is that we can add digital filters to your photos and also you can share them on your Facebook profile or to tweet them. The fourth one is LinkedIn, it allows registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. This list can be used to build business connection, to find jobs, and as a research tool to find out about someone before you do business with them, employ them and start work for them. The final web is Blogs a platform for casual dialogue and discussions on specific topic or opinion. A blog is almost like a diary that everyone can read. Blogs are articles written by the author about events or experiences they are having.

Facebook overtook MySpace as the leading social networking site, so I will highlight on Facebook as means of communication. At the same time it expands English learning & acquisition.

Facebook is an online social networking service. Its name stems from “the colloquial name for the book” given to students at the start of the academic year by some American university administrations to help students get to know one another. Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with more than 1 billion users. Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was an undergraduate computer science student at Harvard University.

Facebook is the most popular social networking of all time. The popularity of Facebook has increased drastically. Within 6 years Facebook has reached 1+ billion users milestone. Nowadays Facebook has become very important part of our life. It is helping us in many ways. With the help of Facebook you can connect to different people from anywhere in the world because almost every people around the world use Facebook. This gives us the opportunity to know more about their custom and tradition, culture, religion etc.
